The paintings in this series are influenced by personal stories and anecdotes described to me by people living with mental illnesses such as depression, bipolar, and anxiety disorders. The paintings I have made are interpretations of these stories. I attempt to communicate the anxiety, alienation, and de-humanization of people struggling with their disorders in a world that stigmatizes the mentally ill and often casts them outside the social order.
The purpose of my paintings is not to label or diagnose particular disorders in my subjects, but to listen to their stories and communicate my interpretation of their experiences. Each painting therefore is an experience of an emotional state, and I convey that emotional state in order to create empathy in the painting’s viewer. For example, I have painted a friend with imaginary arms reaching outward and protruding from his mouth to convey his experience with Tourette Syndrome. The painting is based on conversations with him, in which he describes his inability to suppress his involuntary words and gestures. My painting is an attempt to both empathize with his experience and to communicate it to the viewer.
My biggest project(s) I’m working on right now are four different comics that I’m writing simultaneously. Of course, it’s almost impossible to complete one project when you can’t focus on just one thing. Damn adhd. I have many chapters and ideas *written* for these comics, some character designs, and many redesigned first episodes. I can’t seem to get past that first episode, I get almost all the way done with it, and decide to scrap it and start ALL over. I don’t know what is wrong with me, other than the mental illness and deep self-hatred. Oops. But let me bug you some more about joining my Patreon, because there you will learn all about the mysterious comics I keep talking about. I plan to post more behind the scenes of my art process and the conceptual designs of my comics and also! I will have polls where patrons can help decide on certain elements in my comics! That’s right, YOU can be apart of the creative process! At a higher tier level, I might even make a character based off you or your dog if you wish! So my four comics, I’ll tell you the basics of each:
Comic 1: Dear Prue, a transformative story about a young witch who newly discovers her powers and has to learn magic on her own through the troubles of her chaotic life
Comic 2: No Exit, an existentialist comic about three ill-fated aliens stuck on a broken ship together in the void of space
Comic 3: Outlands & Oracles, a dark fantasy about a determined dryad hunting down her brother's murderers across the land
Comic 4: Complimentary, a very gay and very nerdy romance, where everyone seems to be falling in love with the wrong person
